Sean Hughes
St George's Hall
As the less-than-capacity crowds filed into St George's Hall there was an air of expectation mixed with uncertainty. After years away from the stand up circuit would Hughes be able to cut the
mustard?
The answer, in the main, was a resounding yes. Coming on stage to the roar of The Automatic's Monster, Hughes soon found his voice. Gags about the war on terror and suicide bombers were close to the knuckle, but received probably the biggest laughs of the night.
Now 42, Hughes repeatedly returned to the issue of age and the creaking back reference got tired quickly. But Hughes is and always has been at his best when giving his own off the wall slant on the world. All in all, a highly enjoyable return by a hugely popular comic.
