Saltaire gallery hosts Bradford artist's work

New portraits by David Hockney of his family and friends are on show at Salts Mill.

But unlike the Bradford-born artist’s previous portraits these were not drawn in pencil, painted in oils or watercolours, photographed or videoed.

Instead, he made them on his computer in his Bridlington studio, where he has been based for the past five years.

Hockney, always a keen innovator since his student days at Bradford Art College and London’s Royal Academy of Art, used Adobe Photoshop and Graphics Tablet software to produce the images.

He said: “Photoshop is a computer tool for picture making. In effect it allows you to draw directly in a printing machine.

“One draws with the colours the printing machine has, and the printing machine is one anyone can have. They are now superior to any other kind of printing.

“I used to think the computer was too slow for a draughtsman. You finished a line and the computer was 15 seconds behind, an absurd position for someone drawing. But things have improved, and it now enables one to draw very freely and fast with colour.

“The speed allowed here with colour is something new; swapping brushes in the hand with oil or watercolour takes time.”

Among the images are Hockney’s sister Margaret, brother Paul and friends and studio helpers and assistant Jean Pierre de Goncalves de Lima.

Salts Mill is open from 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and until 6pm at weekends. Admission is free.

I like the fact that, even though he's a successful and established artist, he continues to explore media and methods rather than sticking with a formula.

eh?
.
Photoshop has just had its 20th anniversary, and many, many artists and people have been using it to create artwork since its beginning.
.
You may as well say hes innovative for using a pencil in his career.

His generosity and work was one of the things that enabled Mr Silver to make a go of the mill, like it or loath it his art helped put Saltaire on the map and brought in lots of visitors before world heritage status was bestowed.

This is true, but very very few people use Photoshop purely as a painting tool, which, from the look of the work, is what David Hockney has done.
Most people use Photoshop to manipulate or merge existing images.
.
And depending on what you do with it, using a pencil could be pretty innovative too...!

No, there are many people who do it. I know, its my field. The only difference is unlike DH they aren't household names or strictly professional artists.
.
Go over to conceptart.org or deviantart.com and have a look, huge online resources showcasing hundreds of thousands of digital artists from beginners to pros and masters like Hockney.

Mine also, Rambo! And I'm familiar with deviantart.com :-)
I'm finding this current batch of work very interesting though, because the digital art that isn't done by manipulating existing images tends to use the subtler airbrushing tools and a lot of masking, paths and layers. As graphic illustration, it's very good, but there's something very painterly - almost old-fashioned - about the way Hockney's working, which is kind of incongruent with the technology he's using. And it's very interesting when looked at in the context of his previous work.
