Looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful, the owners of Yew Tree Farm were delighted when, in 1993, they came across Yew Tree Farm, with its attached barn.

“The house is set in a beautiful and secluded valley and is surrounded by fields. We are at the end of Yew Tree Lane, so there is no passing traffic. The gardens and land are full of wildlife and there is a natural pond on the land which attracts numerous birds and other animals.”

Dating back to the mid 1750s the farmhouse was originally three weavers’ cottages, which sometime later were converted into one house.

“We carried out quite a lot of cosmetic alterations, although we didn’t alter the inside very much as it would have spoiled the character of the house.

“All the bedrooms had doors leading into each other, so we made a corridor and they are now individual rooms.”

There’s a lovely flow to the interior of this substantial four bedroom family home.

On the ground floor an entrance porch leads into the living room with its Baby Wenlock stove set in an attractive stone fireplace, ceiling beams and charming window seat.

The large lounge too has a beamed ceiling, wood burning stove, exposed stone work on two walls and two window seats.

In the kitchen there is a range of wall and base units, electric oven and hob with a stainless steel cooker hood, integrated dishwasher, solid fuel Rayburn stove, tiled floor and a very useful larder.

Elsewhere on the ground floor is a conservatory/breakfast room with doors to the front and rear, a rear hall of which is a shower room/WC, utility with a beamed ceiling and a study area, with stained and leaded window to the lounge, a beamed ceiling and stone steps to bedroom one which has an en-suite bathroom with a cast iron free standing bath, WC, pedestal wash basin, a tiled floor and exposed stone work to one wall.

The remaining bedrooms and family bathroom are off the inner hallway on the first floor with two featuring a beamed ceiling and exposed stone work and one also having a period fireplace. Like the others, the fourth bedroom has a beamed ceiling as well as a recessed wardrobe.

Finally, the family bathroom has a white suite with a pedestal wash basin, panelled bath, and part tiled walls.

“Our favourite room is the lounge. In winter we have the log burning stove blazing away and it is so cosy. In summer it is lovely to sit on the window seat and watch all the wildlife.”

It’s not many people who can lay claim to having a wood named after them! “We have had numerous trees planted and a gentleman from Ordinance Survey came to do a survey of the land and we were delighted when he agreed to call it Geraldine’s Wood, which is my wife’s name.”

At the back of the house is a lovely private garden which gets the evening sun. “An area of the land was covered in brambles which were cleared and it is now a cottage garden with two greenhouses.

“We fenced an area of the garden for our Dalmation dog, Chloe, but she only used it once as she was not very impressed with the outdoor life and missed her comfy cushion by the fire. The fence is made of chicken wire, so it would be suitable for keeping chickens.”

“The best thing about living here is the beautiful view and the peace and quiet, but when it comes to what we will miss, we would have to say ‘everything’.”
