BUILT in 1822 this Grade II listed two bedroom cottage is a renovated and delightful gem, tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac, hidden from view.

In the days before the internet, houses were usually found either in the local newspaper or through an estate agent. “I saw this property in the T&A one evening and even though it was a tiny picture, I knew there was something special about this cottage, nestled between two others. My interest was piqued,” says the current owner Renia Piskozub.

“Rose Cottage had an extremely cosy and calm atmosphere. I also couldn’t believe the amount of gardens both front and rear with the additional hard-standing parking and that a garage was also included.

“I fell in love with the cobbles between the house and front garden enhance the feel of the property and as it’s a little cul-de-sac, there’s no traffic!”

That was nineteen and a half years ago, and Renia says it really doesn’t seem that long.

MORE FROM PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

“The cottage has been extensively refurbished. The windows have all been replaced with double glazed wooden sliding sash; the fireplace replaced with a living flame and light oak surround; a new kitchen installed and new bathroom – remodelled to include a shower.”

Fitted solid oak wardrobes in the master bedroom make good use of the alcove space, central heating has been installed, and the cottage has been re-carpeted and re-decorated throughout and the landing woodwork replaced.

“The display cabinet – originally an empty alcove in the stairwell has had shelving, lighting and stained glass installed, which suits the house perfectly.”

“When the stair carpet was being fitted, the carpet fitter came across an old shoe circa 1820 behind one the stairs half way up. Shoes were commonly left in buildings when built by way of superstition to keep bad spirits away. I suggested he put it back as it had clearly been working – and it remains in place today.

“I’ve also left a ‘time capsule’ within the walls of the kitchen for future owners to find.

“The local history society visit the property on their walks from time to time. Our house is completely hidden from the main road but it remains a place of interest to those in the know.

For a while Renia’s favourite room was the bathroom. “It was very lovely with quality fittings – because it’s perfect for pampering.

“The living room is also a favourite with its wooden beams and view onto the garden. Retiring to the bedroom with its deep carpet and warm wooden furniture is a current favourite – but it moves about (my favourite room, not the house!).”

The front garden is south facing with established plants and an oak in the corner, sitting immediately in front of the house it’s perfect for parties and barbecues. “We’ve used it in the summer months for quiet mid-week dinners and for weekend celebrations. The rear gardens are super low maintenance as is the parking space behind the gates.

“Rose Cottage is a hidden gem. Even those who have been up and down the main road for years had no idea this cottage was here.

“I’m going to miss the feeling of being ‘home’ feeling safe and secure. Peoples’ faces when they come round for the first time, the birdsong in the morning and the feeling you are not in an urban area.

“Although it’s time to move on, a fondness for No. 23 will always remain.”
