SIR – I was not in the least surprised to see the picture of Councillor Valerie Binney, happily practising with Mark Helliwell, manager of Fairweather Green Fire Station, for the National Car Wash Day in aid of the Firefighters Charity, the official organisation which helps injured fire fighters during their times of need (T&A, September 18).
Councillor Binney seems to have always been involved with charities and, incidentally chose the Burns Research Unit at the University of Bradford as one of her charities to support when she was Lord Mayor of Bradford.
Not many people are aware that the Burns Unit does not receive statutory funding and relies on donations, hence the current appeal started by Bradford City Football Club and backed by the Telegraph & Argus to help save it from closure.
Thankfully, people like members of Mutts Nuts Scooter Group, based in Northowram, who are organising a scooter ride out from Halifax to York to raise money for the unit (T&A, September 15) will ensure this never happens.
