SIR – I write this letter on the way back from London where a group of us from Shipley Labour Party, including Councillor Vanda Greenwood and Alex Ross, joined others from around the country to demonstrate in support of the national minimum wage outside the House of Commons.

We are shocked and angered by the backing that Philip Davies, the Tory Shipley MP, continues to give to the campaign to abolish the national minimum wage.

The minimum wage is one of the greatest achievements of this Labour government and has guaranteed better living standards for thousands of hard-working people in Shipley. Our first success is that the Bill’s Tory sponsors have been shamed into a postponement of its reading. However, I understand the Bill will be listed again on June 12.

I would urge anyone wanting to sign the petition or to find out more about how they can make their voice heard to visit wageconcern.com or contact Shipley Labour Party.

Everyone should have the right to have a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

Susan Hinchcliffe, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Shipley, Glenroyd, Shipley
