SIR - Though this may seem a little late, I feel compelled to write about my concerns regarding gritting of roads, because it would appear that Bradford Council is not willing to address my concerns.

During the major snowfall at the end of December 2017, a gritter, spreading salt grit along the bus route close to where we live and sent out flying chunks of tarmac onto the pavement with the grit. I was concerned about this, and mildly shocked given what damage it could have done if the pieces had hit a pedestrian or a parked vehicle.

Similarly, and even more dangerous than the last, when snow fell again, in February this year the gritter came along the same bus route and what flew out of the rear mechanism of the gritter, with a great clatter, was astounding. A very large concrete stone some 45cm long x 40cm wide x 25cm depth. On examination it was seen to have a metal spike protruding from it; itself some 20cm long (8”). This happened very close to where I had stood a minute or so earlier.

I consequentially reported this to Bradford Council and was told, without concern, that they would go and remove this item from the pavement. Nothing has happened. I have tried and failed to contact them to re-report the item, and have been left in queues between five and seven people long. Who wants to hold a phone that long?

I know we all want our roads gritted, but foreign objects of any kind, should not be emanating from the gritters, due to the potential damage it could do.

I would not have liked to be driving behind a gritter on a road when objects like this fly out. Th

Our streets are bad enough, with litter, debris and potholes. Bradford Council needs to take more responsibility for its actions, as it would appear, by their own actions it is contributing to the poor state of our roads.
