SIR - Your lead article in the T&A, January 10 applauds the Recorder of Bradford’s “tough line” in sentencing an uninsured and unlicensed driver to be jailed for 12 months for dangerous driving. The court appearance followed a 70 mph blue light police chase around inner city Bradford.
The same court earlier this week sentenced a man to 15 months in prison for dangerous driving after he killed a pedestrian and failed to stop at the scene of the accident. The culprit had previously been banned from driving, and had three further convictions for driving whilst banned.
As the T&A leader correctly says, each trial is bound by sentencing guidelines and the court is obliged to follow those guidelines. In October 2016 the MoJ Consultation Paper “Response to the consultation on driving offences and penalties relating to causing death or serious injury”, soon to become law, did not examine these sentencing guidelines.
So realistically, despite the court’s 'New Year’s Resolution', what will change?
