SIR – I refer to your wonderful feature Remember When (T&A, March 22) and in particular the photograph of ‘Bridge Swinging’ in Myrtle Park, Bingley, in 1951. I believe this shows the footbridge, unfinished, over the river between the Low Meadow and the St Ives Estate being put into position.
A plaque, sadly now gone, in the centre of the bridge stated that the footbridge was erected by Bingley UDC in June 1951 to commemorate The Festival of Britain.
The festival, organised by the Labour Government, particularly Herbert Morrison, was a huge success and many thousands from this area travelled to London in special excursions to enjoy the event.
