SIR - Is it a sign of the times, that certain issues which are, actually, of great importance, are dropping down the list of priorities and even being sidelined by some politicians? Could it be a symptom of the new so-called ‘populism’ that seems to be gaining a bigger profile and influence. Or is it something else?
The G20 (the world’s top economic powers), which comprises more than 80 per cent of the global economy, recently debated the wording of their final joint statement, at their summit in Baden-Baden in Germany.
When it was issued, though it did reaffirm a pledge to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, it surprisingly didn’t mention a commitment to fund action on climate change.
It seems the USA and Saudi Arabia applied pressure to oppose Germany’s intention to include this pledge and so it was omitted.
One official said: “Climate change is out for the time being.”
It is interesting to speculate, after all their many warnings, what the huge number of scientists and climate change experts will make of yet another short term, stupid decision.
