SIR - I have just read the report in today's T&A about the mill fire at the junction of Thornton Road and Hollings Road yesterday.
In the report you say it is at Illingworth Mills. I beg to differ, as to me Illingworth Mills is just a few yards further up Thornton Road in an area known as Brownroyd.
This mill still stands at the side of Thornton Road and has the name Daniel Illingworth fixed to the mill wall.
I joined the Bradford City Fire Brigade in 1973 as a control room operator.
In our control room at Nelson Street were 145 automatic fire alarms which were connected to various mill premises through the city.
One of these alarms was connected to H Hey and Co Ltd.
The address given on the plate and to which I turned out the firemen was H Hey Co. Ltd, Brick Lane Mills, Thornton Road. This was the address we had.
The pre-determined attendance for H Hey was water escape, hydraulic platform 50ft emergency salvage tender hydraulic platform 70ft and 100ft turntable ladder plus water escape from Fairweather Green Station.
When the firemen arrived at the mill they investigated the cause of the alarm actuation and it was usually "False Alarm With Good Intent" after which the firemen returned to station or carried on with drills in the brigade area.
