Now it’s time to dig deep again
Telegraph & Argus readers can be justifiably proud of what you achieved when, ten years ago, you dug deep, worked hard and raised the money needed to provide Bradford Royal Infirmary with its first-ever Magnetic Resonance Imagining machine (better known as an MRI scanner).
There were just two years between the £1 million appeal being launched and the scanner being bought. That was remarkable going for a district which more than makes up in generosity of spirit for what it lacks in wealth.
Before the scanner was acquired and set to work, people from the Bradford area had to travel to Leeds or Halifax to be scanned, sometimes after a wait of up to a year. Because you responded so well to the appeal organised by this newspaper to provide Bradford with its own machine, waiting lists have been cut, thousands of patients have been helped and in some cases lives have been saved.
Now that scanner has come to the end of its natural life. However, it has proved its worth to such a degree that hospital bosses are making plans to replace it out of NHS funds, acknowledging that it is a priority and should not be left to charity.
But as ever, there are new challenges to be met as technology moves on. We are sure our readers will respond to our Listening For Life appeal to provide Bradford with a cochlear implant centre at the BRI with the same enthusiasm, helping to bring the gift of hearing to those who go through life in a silent or muffled world.
