Should I bother with this check?
1:51pm Friday 16th May 2008
Q I've been sent a package by the NHS asking me to send samples away for bowel cancer screening. I'm apparently now in the age group that is at most risk of bowel cancer. Should I bother? I've never had any bowel problems and have had no relatives as far as I know with the disease. I really don't fancy doing the test.

Patience is a virtue with that nagging cough
8:41am Friday 9th May 2008
This has been an odd month. In the surgery we expect the winter load of extra coughs and colds to subside gradually through April, leaving us with a relatively easy early May.

He may not have the super hero's ability to fly or be sporting a Lycra suit, but to the medics who have treated him Ronnie Bray is Superman.' 9:11am Friday 25th April 2008
Ten years ago we welcomed the first vaccine against meningitis C, one of the three variants of germs that cause this devastating infection of the brain.

Why am I feeling dizzy?
9:06am Friday 25th April 2008
Q About three months ago I developed dizziness - the world started to spin round me, always in the same direction. For a while I couldn't stand up without feeling that I might fall. The doctor diagnosed acute labyrinthitis, and gave me tablets of stemetil, which helped a lot. However I'm still getting the same dizzy spells, I often feel a bit sick, and from time to time I'm getting double vision. Should I go back to my doctor, or does it take a long time for the labyrinthitis to recover?

All the vitamins you’ll need... without the pills
8:18am Friday 18th April 2008
I'm writing this column on the day that the news broke of a Danish study of the value of vitamin supplements. It won't come as a surprise to regular readers that they didn't lengthen life and may even shorten it.
