Plant more trees – don’t dig them up

SIR - In light of the recent article about Bradford Community Housing Trust providing tenants in the Canterbury estate area with fruit trees (T&A, February 2), it is ironic and somewhat puzzling that another local housing association - Brunel (part of the Yorkshire Housing Group) - have removed 80 healthy trees in Manningham as part of the St Paul's conservation area, with the full co-operation of the Council, because they were deemed to be of "low amenity value", despite the fact that these trees were very much enjoyed by the tenants themselves.

How can this be?

  • SIR - The fruit tree planting scheme is wonderful (T&A, February 2).

How about expanding it to other estates parks and public places? I do so hope it is the start of a much broader initiative.
