PUPILS at Wibsey Primary School are being given a chance to engage in a wider range of sports, including Parkour and fencing.

The school has teamed up with school sports and PE partner Premier Sport, who have worked on a Sports Development Plan with Tracey Rolston, Nursery Teacher and Outdoor Learning Lead and Emma Clayton, PE Coach.

The new sports and PE offer includes a series of taster sessions led by Premier Sport for the 360 pupils in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 to be held over the next three days.

The aim of the tasters is to increase the range of sports and PE on offer at the school. Pupils currently take part in gymnastics, football, bench ball, rounders, tag rugby, hockey, swimming, athletics and dance. The sessions will give them a taste of new sports - Parkour, fencing, archery and ultimate frisbee.

Premier Sport is also looking at ways to increase the range of lunchtime and after-school clubs which currently include joint football sessions for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6, multi-sports, dance and Preparation of Competitions.

Pupils’ fitness levels will also be tracked using the Golden Mile assessment three times a year, starting on September 29, when the whole school will run the Race For Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The school will also hold a Macmillan Coffee event on the same day.

Headteacher Nigel Cooper said: “We are really excited about our new sport and PE programme. It will give the whole school an opportunity to participate in more activities and get fitter. The partnership with Premier Sport has already proved beneficial and we are looking forward to working with them as they track fitness levels and come up with even more new ideas.”

The school is also part of the Tong School Sports Partnership, allowing them to compete with other primary schools in a range of sports.
