A TEAM of young performers from a Bradford school wowed judges at a recent competition.

Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College was one of the schools from the district to take part in the Northern finals of the Rock Challenge on Friday.

The event, held at Grimsby Auditorium, saw school team compete against nine other schools taking part in musical performances that they have written, choreographed and created costumes and scenery for.

Buttershaw’s striking show, Phobia, earned the school the runner up spot in the competition, meaning they will be performing in the contest’s Premier Division next year.

The piece sees its main character trapped in a world of irrational fear, fighting the demons that plague him.

The school also won awards for set design, costuming and choreography.

The winner of the contest was Benjamin Britten Music Academy, Lowestoft.

As part of the contest, school teams made up of 20 to 100 performers decide on a theme, then create the choreography for their five to eight-minute dance-drama performance. They select and record the medley of music for their soundtrack, and design and make their sets and costumes.

The Rock Challenge is run by the Be Your Best Foundation, which encourages young people to lead healthy lifestyles and to be their best without the need for tobacco, alcohol or other drugs.
