A LECTURER from Bradford College has taken up a key role with a professional body.

Amy Seaman, who teaches on the Ophthalmic Dispensing degree courses at the college, has been appointed Sub Regional Lead for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO), which represents thousands of opticians across the country.

Mrs Seaman said: “I am excited about the opportunities that the role will enable me to pursue and to become more involved in the political aspect of our field.

“The role will involve raising the profile and professional identity of dispensing opticians. This will include working with the local optical committees to identify opportunities for all optical professionals to work together in the best interests of our patients.”

As well as teaching, Amy still works in the profession with a position at Specsavers in Chesterfield. She believes the different roles are complementary.

“My contact with students will enable me to also promote and encourage them,” she said.

“I have an insight into the training of dispensing opticians, which gives me an understanding of their needs - both for their future careers and their educational needs to equip them to be the best newly-qualified opticians possible. Considering them in future educational and pathway decisions is an aspect that I will also promote at all opportunities.”
