BRADFORD College students will be encouraged to recycle their used chewing gum by using new recycling bins.

The Gumdrops, small, bright pink bins outside the campus, are actually made from recycled gum, and were installed to reduce litter levels on campus.

Gum collected in the 10 bins will then be recycled to create similar bins.

The college has fitted the Gumdrops outside its David Hockney Building, Lister Building, Old Building and Trinity Green site in the city centre.

Ian Fox, the college’s Estates Manager, said: “We want our student to dispose of their gum responsibly as when it is just dropped on the street it becomes an eyesore and is tricky to clean up.

“By providing these easy and convenient bins we are making it easier for them to keep the college environment a pleasant place.

“We think the students will use them, particularly as they are eye-catching and a great example of recycling. They will help keep Bradford College a cleaner and greener environment.”

Figures from Gumdrop Ltd show that the bins can reduce chewing gum litter by an average of up to 46 per cent in the first 12 weeks of use.
