THE number of international students from outside the EU studying at the University of Bradford fell by almost 45 per cent in the past five years.

New figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency yesterday show that 1,090 non-EU international students studied at the university in the2015/16 academic year - down from 1,980 in the 2010/11 year.

It was one of the biggest falls experienced by a UK university. The University of Hull also saw a sharp drop of 40 per cent.

Representatives of the international education sector yesterday claimed these falls are having a negative effect on both the universities and local economies.

James Pitman, Managing Director of Higher Education at Study Group said:

“What was one of Britain’s most important export sectors is now in decline, in direct response to the rhetoric and policy choices made by this Government.

“It is our vulnerable communities that are hurt the most. The data shows that cities with the weakest economies are the ones that are seeing the largest decline in student numbers.”
