TWO primary schools in Holme Wood have been told they require improvement by inspectors.

Both Carrwood Primary, which has around 400 pupils, and Knowleswood Primary School, which has around 467, have recently been visited by Ofsted, and both were given “requires improvement” ratings.

However, inspectors actually praised Knowleswood Primary in most areas, saying it was “good” in every category except outcomes for pupils.

The recently published report into Knowleswood praises the school’s leadership, teaching, early years provision and personal development of pupils. But it says: “Outcomes for pupils are improving, but are not yet good.

“Rapid improvements seen in leadership and management and in teaching have not had sufficient time to impact on pupil’s progress and achievement.”

But it said the new leadership had lead to “rapid and substantial improvements in the school.

“The school benefits from a hugely positive culture in which diversity is celebrated.”

Knowleswood Primary headteacher Dean Tombling said: “We accept the findings of the Ofsted report. We know that the school’s results need to continue to improve and everyone remains focused on achieving this.

“We are pleased that Ofsted has recognised the many strengths of our school.

"We are confident that these results will improve and we will continue working hard to ensure that all pupils at Knowleswood strive to become the very best they can be.”

The report into Carrwood Primary School says it requires improvement in every category, and that not enough pupils make good progress.

It adds that pupil attendance is below average, and that results for reading, writing and maths at key stage 1 were “well below average.”

But inspectors say the school’s new head “knows what needs to be done to improve the school’s work.”

The school’s Phoenix Centre provision, which has 12 pupils with additional behavioural needs, is also praised in the report.

Coun Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s Executive for Education, Employment and Skills said: “The report for Knowleswood Primary shows that clear and significant progress is being made and we will continue to work with the school to help it improve further. The school is judged to be good in four of the five main Ofsted inspection areas including the school’s leadership and management and the quality of its teaching and learning. The report gives us confidence that the school is heading in the right direction.

“We have worked with Carrwood Primary to bring in an associate headteacher who will help to secure the improvements which are necessary and we will continue to provide the school with close support.”

The third primary school in Holme Wood, Ryecroft Primary Academy, was judged Outstanding in 2014.
