Student teachers from Bradford College visit Green Lane Primary School, Manningham

Green Lane Primary School, in Manningham, has been given a partnership award by the college for its outstanding contribution to teacher training.

A group of 18 student teachers from Bradford College visited the school yesterday to have a look at how classes were taught phonics to prepare them for their future careers.

The students took part in a CIA – Curriculum in Action – day, to learn more about life in schools.

Tracey Parry, collaboration support manager for the Shine partnership, said the award was a big reward for the school.

She said: “It shows all our hard work is paying dividends.

“The students can learn good practice and how phonics are taught which will help shape their future careers.”

Jane Townend, deputy headteacher at Green Lane, said the school was “very appreciative” at being handed the prize.

Bradford College students who spend time in schools as part of their learning can all nominate a school for the award, and Green Lane received the most votes.

“The award has come on the back of last year’s work with the college, we took a number of students on during the year,” said Mrs Townend.

“We had nine students through the year, and on two days we had 25 on each day.

“Today we had 18 teachers in training observing classes being taught and individual children to look at things like how children work alone, whether that be reading in the reading area or doing extra maths or literacy.

“We absolutely see training future generations as our responsibility, and it is all about keeping the talent in Bradford.

“We don’t want to lose the exciting new teachers coming through, we want to keep them in the city by giving them real experience.

“The children react really positively to the students; it gives us variety at the school and keeps things fresh.

“They see it as a good opportunity to show how polite they are and how welcoming they are to new people.”
