THE Lord Mayor of Bradford has officially opened a primary school's new ball court, built after parents and pupils raised £10,000 in just one year.

Councillor Geoff Reid attended Shibden Head Primary Academy in Queensbury this week to officially open the court.

The facility was top of the list when parents, pupils and staff were asked what they would like to develop at the school. Thanks to events organised by the Friends of Shibden Head, including Christmas Fairs, Mother’s Day stalls, discos and a penalty shoot with Billy Bantam from Bradford City, the school managed to raise enough to fund the court.

Cllr Reid cut the ribbon at a special school event on Monday, and the children can look forward to playing a wide variety of ball games, including football, netball and cricket on school grounds.

Head Sarah Thornton is delighted with the new facility, and said: "It will be a great place for the children to enjoy ball games in a safe environment and it also promotes healthy exercise for all ages.

“The project has been a team effort and we are grateful to everyone who has helped us reach our target.”
