YOUNGSTERS and staff got into character at a school in Bradford as they took part in a Roald Dahl day.

Almost all the 450 pupils from reception age to year si at Woodside Academy in Fenwick Drive, Bradford, dressed as their favourite characters from the famous author's books as they celebrated the day he would have been 100.

"It was a fantastic day and was great to see the children come into assembly dressed as Roald Dahl characters, said assistant principal Ceinwen Lodge.

"We did have a lot of Willy Wonkas and several Matildas, but also got a few dressing up as characters from the Big Friendly Giant because of its recent film release."

All the staff and teaching assistants dressed up, including year four leader and teacher June Paley, who met the children dressed as strict head teacher Miss Trunchbull, from the Matilda books.

"We focus on Roald Dahl books in year four and have his books in the school library and classrooms. The day was organised from feedback from parents and it was a fantastic take-up. It was a great way of raising awareness of reading in school," Miss Lodge added.
