Bingley business chiefs welcome supermarket

Business chiefs have welcomed plans for supermarket giants Tesco to build a new store.

The company wants to build a 40,000sq ft store on the former auction mart site in Keighley Road in Bingley.

Tesco says the site is an ideal location for a new supermarket which it says will give 80 per cent of Bingley residents who travel out of town for their regular food shop a more convenient choice.

The supermarket said only 20 per cent of the store would be non-food items and that it would create 350 new jobs.

However, many residents claim the building of the supermarket, which is proposed for a site on the edge of the town, will spell the end for smaller shops in its centre.

They have also questioned whether Bingley needs a new supermarket ahead of the opening of the multi-million pound 5Rise development set for Myrtle Walk.

Fears have also been raised about the “vitality” of Bingley’s street market, held three times a week, which was built in 2007 a cost of £1million.

Following a public exhibition of the plans, Rob Harrison of Bingley Chamber of Trade and Commerce, described Tesco’s proposals as a “good thing”.

He said that, despite its location, it would attract shoppers to Bingley who would otherwise visit supermarkets in Shipley or Keighley.

“If Tesco was opened, they would stay in Bingley and do their shopping there,” he said.

In a straw poll of residents, the majority saw the proposed new Tesco store as a positive move for the town, said Mr Harrison, the chamber’s former chairman.

He said: “I think the general message is that, unless Tesco provide the best in the area, people will continue to use and support the smaller shops.”

He acknowledged concerns that Tesco would “destroy” other businesses but said: “Tesco vehemently denied that. They said they are hoping to set up their store to make a positive impact on the local economy and create local jobs.”

Deborah Hayeems, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, previously told the T&A: “With a new supermarket in Bingley, we can make shopping trips a good deal shorter, meaning residents spend less time in the car.”

Build a new tesco and close the rest of the shops, does that make sense? If it had been a good idea Morrisons would have been there like a shot.

It is definitely needed and will be a real benefit to Bingley.

If we want a return to life before the bypass then open a tesco on this site. I for one do not look forward to an increase in traffic and a return to many road accidents along the old A650.

In my view the alterations to the main street have gone too far, imagine the chaos if (and it will) the bypass has to be closed for some reason.
It seems to me that traffic there is increasing more every time i travel through.

This is good news for residents in Bingley and the surrounding area, not only for better choice but for the economy with the creation of 350 jobs. It’s hard to believe that a town the size Bingley, which also services a lot of villages, doesn’t have a decent supermarket. I live within walking distance of the town centre and apart from regular trips to the butcher I don’t shop in Bingley due to the lack of quality and choice in the shops. The majority of people I talk to welcome the move and thinks it been a long overdue.

I QUITE AGREE WITH BINGLEY1 THERE ARE ENOUGH SUPER MARKETS WITHIN 2-3 MILES AND TESCOS WOULD NOT BE AN ASSET TO THE TOWN AT ALL

i hope you will b happy when the first schoolchild gets knocked down with the massive increase in traffic and watch all the small shops in the centre go one by one within a couple of years of it opening as they want to sell every thing at tescos leaving nothing for any body else because the smaller shops cant bully their supliers like tesco do to cut prices

Bingley has never had a proper supermarket, where you can have 2 hours FREE parking, take a trolly in to the store, select goods, pay and return the trolly to the car to unload.
Bingley Main Street has evolved in its present form, over 30 years, having adjusted to the 80% of the residents shopping out of town. The majority of shops in the town centre supply goods and services not provided by supermarkets. Estate agents, banks, solicitors, insurance brokers, hairdressers, beauticians, bars, bistros, restaurents, fast food take aways, amusement arcades.
These functions are not found in supermarkets. Years ago the town had a vibrant regular retail livelihood, but double yellow lines on both side of the Main Road and the gutting of old Bingley in 1973 by the former local council changed all that. A Darwinian style evolution by the survival of the economically "fit", gives us what we have today.
The only site for a large store AND car park is opposite Bingley Grammar School. I would support such a development.

A tesco would be a great idea. The reality is that the majority of people buy their food from supermarkets and not from the market or the co-op.

As someone who lives in Bingley or thereabouts I welcome the proposals. Currently we have either the choice of travelling to Sainsburys in Keighley (soon to be joined by Asda on the 13th of July) and Tesco's Forster Square. We occasionally order on-line with Ocado who provide a good service but they have a limited range.
If the new Tesco does go ahaead I imagine it will sound the death knell for the already struggling Saturday market.

I live in Shipley and agree that Asda could do with some competition, but don't think a Tesco in this location would be a good idea as it will affect trade in Bingley too much. Whatever happened to the idea of a new Sainsburys opening in Shipley where Focus currently is? That would be a much better idea!

The saturday market has been a great success and have always looked busy when we have been, which is nearly every week. Bingley needs a supermarket. My choice would not have been Tescos, but as no one else has come forward....

As for the Co-Op. The place is a joke. You end up queuing round the shop to pay for stuff.

Support your local stores and get the rest from the supermarket. Simples!

Another bonus will be the end of the carboot sales at the market.

thats a lot of new jobs for a town which has lost a lot of major employers over the last few years, its got to be a good thing.

Visit http://www.tescopoly

to see why tesco might not be the best supermarket choice for Bingley.
If you're against tesco landing, email them at: info@tescopoly.org
They can guide/help with opposing an application/starting a campaign. Does Bingley really need 2 supermarkets and many others a stones-throw away?
