‘PC Doctor’ delivers daughter at home
Mark and Claire Reynard with baby Claudia

Computer expert Mark Reynard is more used to being on the end of the line guiding people through their technology problems.

But the tables were turned when his wife Claire went into labour at their home, sending him into a spin.

He dialled 999 and was talked through delivering his daughter by a member of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service's control room team.

"Claire had just got back from the doctors when she felt her contractions start," said Mark, of Silsden.

"I was about to ring the hospital when she shouted that she wasn't going to make it to hospital.

"Claire started pushing and the baby just popped out into my arms."

An ambulance arrived ten minutes later to take baby Claudia and mum to hospital.

Claire said: "Claudia was fine straight away, she wasn't bothered by the birth at all. It's just us that were traumatised.

"So many things could have gone wrong with the birth, we are really lucky she came out fine."

Mother and daughter have now returned home. Claudia is the couple's third child, joining Jack, four, and Grace, three.

Mark, known as the PC Doctor, said he had no plans to venture any further into midwifery.

He said: "It was pretty traumatic, but it was the most memorable day of my life. There aren't many people who can say they delivered their own daughter.

"My friends were ribbing me in the pub about how I call myself the PC Doctor, but I certainly won't be taking it up full time."

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "The call was taken by one of our newest recruits and this was her first call helping to deliver a baby.

"After dispatching an ambulance to the scene, she stayed on the line and talked to the caller offering advice and reassurance.

"Initially the caller was panicky but managed to calm down once he was given instructions on how he could help.

"Throughout the birth the mum stayed calm and the baby was born within ten minutes of the call being received.

"We would like to congratulate all involved in such a satisfying outcome."
