Colbeck's debt of gratitude to Darlo
 |
| Joe Colbeck celebrates his goal in the victory over Notts County last month |
Joe Colbeck today admitted his City career was rescued by a six-week spell at Darlington.
The flying winger is currently basking in his best run of form at Valley Parade after winning over Stuart McCall and the fans.
And as he prepares for tomorrow's return to the Darlington Arena, Colbeck revealed he owes the Quakers a huge debt of gratitude.
The 21-year-old played six games on loan for them earlier in the season - a short-term fix that gave him the injection of confidence to come back and force his way into the City side.
"It did me the world of good at Darlington," said Colbeck. "I definitely think it has made me a better player.
"When you're asked about going on loan, you always think the worst. The gaffer said it was only for the short term to get some confidence but in the back of my mind I was still wondering if I would ever play for Bradford again.
"But I went into my first game at Darlington feeling that the pressure was off. I wasn't worried about whether I'd be playing or not and just went out and enjoyed my football.
"That's when you get the best out of yourself and that's what I'm doing now. My confidence is high and I'm going into games thinking about scoring goals or getting that end product rather than worrying if I'm going to be in the side or not."
Darlington were so pleased with Colbeck's contribution that Dave Penney tried to sign him in January - a bid that City rejected. Colbeck, who netted his fourth City goal of the season last week at Rotherham, is geared up for a special reception from the Quakers chief when their paths cross once again.
He added: "Dave Penney knows what I can do and I'm sure he'll tell their lads to give me a big tackle in the first ten minutes to put me out of the game! That's the type of manager he is but I'm looking forward to going up there and punishing them.
"It always helps your confidence knowing that other managers are interested. But I'm very happy at Bradford playing week-in, week-out and I want to keep building on my form for the rest of the season."
Colbeck has another year to go on his contract and is one of the lucky few not to be involved in the scramble for new deals.

Im glad we have him for another year at least, thought he might of been one of the players who were out of contract. Keep going Colbeck. CTID

I have always rated Joe, his work rate has always been 100%, but his desission making has let him down sometimes. I was pleased last season when he was given a new contract, and am more than pleased with his improved confidence since coming back to Bradford.

I'm afraid I was one of Joe's biggest knockers early doors. Not because he was a bad player but because he didn't do the things he was more than capable of. Since the turn of this year he has consistently produced some MoM performances, grafted harder in one match than he did in 3 previously and has finally found an end product, including goals. The early season form may not have been all Joe's own fault as the lad was probably expecting to be dropped no matter how he played as he has been in previous seasons, this does not give a player the confidence to attempt things which help to make you the outstanding player on the field. I now look forward to seeing Joe's name on the teamsheet and watching his skill and graft on a weekly basis. He is a player who should epitomise the type we need for next season, young, hungry and ours. If SM got nothing else correct in his first season of management, the loaning out of JC has proved to be a masterstroke as he came back to us with the attitude of a new signing wishing to prove his worth. This he has more than done, and I congratulate him on his efforts and performances in the second half of this season.

I have always rated Joe. I sit just behind Stu Mc in sunwin, all you used to get was critisism of Joe.(All the Loud mouthed knockers!) I've always said he'd come strong, he's matured and with that he's realised he must put 100% in all the time! [bold]bold[/bold] All the young lads are finally getting out of the"TODD MODE" That man destroyed the younger lads and their confidence! [bold]bold[/bold] [quote]quote[/quote] COME ON STUART EXTEND HIS CONTRACT ASAP BEFORE OTHERS START SNIFFING AROUND!

Yeah Joe had some difficult moments early in his career and used to get more than his own fair share of abuse but he's come on in leaps and bounds since his loan spell. He still isn't the finished product but he's shown enormous potential with his six goals (albeit two for Darlo) and he should be a shoe-in for the side next season.

All these Joe Colbeck 'fans' deciding to crawl out of the woodwork now. Where were they all when the lad needed their support? It's not sufficient to criticise those who shout abuse from the stands now. You should be actively supporting the player during the game. Make sure all those around you know when Joe has done something good. A loud 'Well done Joe!' for example. Plus, of course, some biting asides. 'Well done Joe. That was good football that some of us appreciate.' 'Ignore him Joe, you did the right thing there'. Yes, he is playing with more confidence, but why do people immediately say get him on a longer contract now? He has a year. If we are keeping all these players from this season, SM is not going to have much leeway to bring in all the players he has identified who can improve the team.

Just picked up the tickets from Darlo's ground. As of 1pm friday City have only sold 300 tickets.
You can park in the ground for £5. But do not park around the ground as they will tow your car away!!
Thats the end of my public service advice!
STAN,are you missing your mate Ali??
Loved your posting it was so interesting, much better than when you try to educate us about football!!

One more year is sufficient at the moment, the less players are in their comfort zone regarding contracts etc the harder they should try, I say should but after some performances by certain City players this season it makes you wonder if they really want to be pro footballers, as not being offered a contract by the 81st worst club in the league this season doesn't give you much room to manouvre within the game. Joe has a year to run on his and we need him to perform to his 2008 level for the duration of that year, part way through that contract is when a new one should be offered, that way if Joe is playing extremely well he can ask for a raise, if we don't match his expectations you can bet there will be clubs that do, but first of all lets keep em hungry and wanting to play and be proud to play for Bradford City.

Jim, 81st worst would have us 11th in the Premiership!
I don't ever want us back in the Premiership as I think the Football League should cast the greedy b*st*rds afloat and concentrate on real football for real football supporters, but that's another rant for another time!
I agree, he's got one year left, if he's still improving and doing the business come Christmas, that is the time to start talking about extending contracts. By then we'll be 4 points ahead at the top of the league, looking forward to promotion which I'm certain will lessen the lure of any other clubs sniffing around enough to ensure he stays with us.

Hahahaha, pedant. 81st best then.
Agreed on the Prem too. My favourite days were wet Wednesday nights away to Workington Town at the Borough Ground?? I think.
I didn't just mean Joe with contract extensions either, I meant any player who wants to play for and be paid by BCAFC, they must be hungry and want to be a part of our club.

Wasn't bothered either way Stan, just didn't join in as I know full well JR would have been embarrassed as hell by it. But the fact that fans think so highly of him will please him no end, so either way it is a good thing not a bad one. For some reason both our chairmen come in for stick from so-called fans and for no other reason than giving us a club to support, no-one else worried about it bar Julian, and the help now from ML too. At least Julian will be aware that not all City fans are idiotic takers, some fans do care about the club.

Joe Colbeck is the worst player ive seen at this club in 16 years.HE must go to a blacksmith to get new boots [should i say hooves].A job at Blackpool in the summer giving rides on the beach would suit him fine.Putting footballer on his C.V is lies and deception.

where as i agree that colbeck is playing well at the moment it has taken a long time to get to this level of consistency and effort especially at this level of football and i think its this that has forced so many negatives about him yes he might get player of the year but we are a poor team at the moment just keep up the good work and effort joe thats all we ask

A BIG WELL DONE TO THE COACHING STAFF YESTERDAY!!
Whatever was said at half-time should be bottled and used for all games in the future!!
Colbeck was superb, Conlon had a 20 min spell that Darlo couldnt cope with! Also Penford had a big game.
Just one other thing.....the away support again was top drawer!!

In my opinion on the balance of play in the first half I thought we were unlucky to be behind at half-time.
The penalty given to Darlo was soft & I also thought Wethers should have scored at the other end for me Darlo never really threatened.
Second Half apart from a five minute period in the second half,we outplayed the home side, hopefully BCFC can continue the form at Rochdale on Tuesday.
Onwards & Further Upwards !

No more Ali, Stan threatening legal action, me being pushed off the boards for 'foul and abusive language, when others are still using it) and now Shaun has actually posted a positive comment! Even Skippy agreed with Shaun's view of the coaching staff.
What next, Leeds fans agreeing we are the best team in Yorkshire?
For the record, I thought it another excellent performance and the effort really paid off in the 2nd half. Two of the best players on the park were Colbeck (again) and Penford. Kids for the future. Let's give a couple more a chance, starting with Ainge at the back.

play offs are not out of the equation just yet--look at the remaining fixtures and it is fair to say they are nearly all true six pointers for us. several of the teams above will lose their nerve for sure whereas we are coming into form and a late run may do it.
remember the Kamara surge to the play offs and through--just maybe just maybe something , at last, is turning our way. However anything but a win at Rochdale will efectively end our season for sure.
A great second half-- but why why has that come so late in the season?
keep the faith boys--you can do it!
even with ALI AND STAN THE MAN!
