A new branch of the Merchant Navy Association has opened to serve Yorkshire.

The White Rose branch held its first meeting on December 6 to decide on a name and venue. Some officials were elected but the first meeting proper will be at 14.00 hours on Sunday, January 10, in the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Harrogate.

The first Sunday of each month will be meeting day until April, and from May a weekday meeting will be held to enable more members to attend.

The association holds two reunions a year, has a newsletter and a website and supports H4H by sponsoring the womens’ Marine Assault Course Team. They are also starting a golf section. DIARY DATES: Today: Parachute Regiment meets in Thornbury barracks at 20.00 hours. The funeral takes place today of Lawrence Petty who has died aged 88. A cremation in is at Scholemoor at 12.40. Laurie was a member of the Royal Marines Association for 60 years.

Tomorrow: RAF Association meets in Unit 16, Listerhills Science Park, at 13.00 hours.

Bingley branch of the Royal British Legion meets at 20 Heath Street, Bingley, 19.00 hours.

Thursday: Royal Military Police meet in Pudsey Royal British Legion Club at 20.00 hours. Friday: RAF Regiment meets in Thornbury barracks at 19.30 hours Saturday: Borneo and Malayan veterans meet in the Headingley Club, Leeds, at 14.00 hours.

Monday: REME Association meets at Slackside WMC, Wibsey, at 19.30 hours.
