GOVERNMENT and business chiefs have reacted to the controversial decision to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

The Department for Transport confirmed the anticipated decision shortly after 11am this morning, with secretary of state Chris Grayling describing it as "momentous", and protesters have already locked arms outside of parliament against the announcement.

Concerns raised from the proposal include “intolerable” noise from the increased amount of planes flying overhead and worsened air quality.

However, others have praised the outcome, which could mean a third runway will be operational by 2025, saying it will add tens of thousands of jobs and apprentices to help boost the economy.

Councillor Simon Dudley, leader of Royal Borough and Maidenhead Council, slammed the government's decision.

He said: “This is extremely disappointing news which will have a huge impact on the daily lives of our residents.

“Our residents will suffer a substantial loss of quality of life, with many impacts, including additional intolerable noise affecting more people, increased number of planes flying over head, worse air quality, increased traffic, and likely housing and infrastructure problems.

“We acknowledge the important role Heathrow holds for us, but from the start we have said we want to see a better not bigger airport and today’s decision flies in the face of the concerns relayed to us by our residents.”

It is anticipated that more protests and legal challenges will follow the controversial decision, and campaigners are expected to focus on air quality and Britain's climate change commitment.

The third runway, which could be up and running by 2025, could lead to around 50 per cent more planes flying over the capital.

Paul Britton, CEO, Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, praised the government's announcement earlier today.

He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news that the Government has given the go ahead for a third runway at London Heathrow.

"Our standing in the world as a global leader, with transportation links to match, has just received the biggest boost possible and one that will prove incredibly important, not only to the south east but for the entire country, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.

“Whilst confidence has taken a knock since Brexit the positive outcome for Heathrow reinforces the message that the UK is open for business and will continue in its role as a central player on the world stage.

"This is good news for all sizes of business and there will be lasting impact on infrastructure, the economy and our long term stability – at the forefront of the European economy - and security.”

Chris Grayling, secretary of state for transport, is expected to make a statement on the decision around 1pm tpday.

A spokesman for Heathrow Airport said: “We welcome the news that Heathrow is Government’s preferred site for a new runway and look forward to hearing the full details later from the Transport Secretary.

“Expansion of Heathrow is the only option that will connect all of the UK to global growth, helping to build a stronger and fairer economy.”
