A local accountancy firm and one of its major clients are both celebrating landmarks.
Cleckheaton-based Clough & Company is marking 30 years of working for Birstall based budget retailer Poundworld, which is preparing to open its hundredth store and on track to break through the £150m sales barrier.
Chris Edwards, owner of Poundworld, began selling household goods from a market stall in 1964 before expanding into a retail unit in 1974. Since then the company has gone on to open stores in city centres and on retail parks throughout the UK and now employs more than 2,500 full and part time staff.
It has recently opened six stores and four more, which will take the total to 100, will open by the end of the year. The company plans to have 250 stores by 2014.
Nigel Bullas, Clough & Company managing partner, said: “When we started working with Poundworld in 1980, the company only had a handful of stores.
“By the year ending March 2010 they reached a turnover of £108m.
“At a time when a lot firms are merging, Clough & Company’s success is based on our ability to forge long-standing relationships with clients and for us to have worked and grown alongside Poundworld for 30 years is testament to this ethos.”
