Morrisons says alcohol move is only so its supermarkets can open earlier

Morrisons can extend sales at Idle store Morrisons can extend sales at Idle store

Supermarket giant Morrisons has been given the go ahead to extend sales of alcohol at one of its supermarkets.

Drinks sales will now be allowed at its Five Lane Ends store from 6am to 11pm so it will be in line with rivals Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury.

Bradford Licensing Panel yesterday heard it was part of a rolling programme for all the 360-plus Morrisons stores nationwide to do the same.

The extended hours application was granted at the City Hall meeting, making the Idle store one of the first Morrisons outlets to have the choice of opening its tills from 6am.

The application had initially sparked fears among ward councillors about encouraging under-age drinking, but a spokesman for the store said residents could be reassured because the licensing victory did not mean they would necessarily selling alcohol so early in the morning.

He said the extended hours application was only a means to being able to open the Five Lane Ends store earlier than the current 8am for food and other supplies shopping – but he stressed there were still no plans by the Bradford-based supermarket chain to open any of its stores 24 hours a day.

The spokesman said: “If we want to open our stores at 6am then we had no choice but to apply for the extended hours because the alcohol section is a part of the store at large. It doesn’t mean we will definitely be selling alcohol from 6am.

“What we want to do is open our shops earlier because that’s what our customers are telling us they want us to do – especially people who work nightshifts.

‘‘We are only making changes to suit shopping habits.’’ Last month Councillor Carol Beardmore (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) complained that the extension would undermine efforts being made by the local community and police to tackle under-age drinking.

She warned cheap drink readily available at all hours in a supermarket would “... only add to this timebomb”.

However, only one trader who runs an off-licence near the Five Lane Ends store attended yesterday’s meeting – and he raised no objections.

How have this store been able to get this extension passed when the residents of farmhill road signed a petition against this and the noise we suffer on a nightly basis from the loading bay,and was handed to david ward on the 22nd of october, had we been informed of this meeting we would have attended and objected very strongly we have complained to the store and head office for a number of years about the noise on the loading bay keeping us awake, but although we have had reasurances from the store they will stop but the noise continues and we continue to lose sleep, a good nights sleep is a basic human right not a treat handed out by Morrisons store at e5

They will have had to put public notices up and also advertise the application so if you haven't seen it then surely that is your problem and not theirs.

I use that store almost every day and walk to it from my home, I have not seen these notices. If there well hiden.
These Supermarkets will do anything to sell more alcohol and in the Media they say they are trying cut down alcohol sales to under 25's.

storck, you dont know what your talking about no-one in the area this will affect knew about this meeting, the application for the extension was on two very small notices on two lamp posts on norman lane for a couple of days, they had been removed by the time we were aware of the application, we filled out a questionaire sent out by David ward and returned them to him, try living with the noise we have to and imagine how it will get worse with longer opening hours.

I live near Forster Square so I know all about noise and late night deliveries thank you very much.

The signs have to be up for 1 month, if you can prove they were not up for that period of time then the license should have been refused. If you saw the notices how come you didn't know about the meeting?

the notices were about the application to extend the hours not the meeting and i didnt see them we were told about them, but they were removed when i went up to see them the same day i was told they were there, i asked a staff member of morrisons if it was true and she said that even they had not been told anything.
