Three young engineers who work at a Shipley company and attend Bradford College have won a skills challenge.

Andrew Wilkinson, Simon Ward and Andrew Hyde, have won the WorldSkills UK Engineering Challenge with a score of 93 out of 100. They had to design a cost-effective component, competing against three other finalists from British Aerospace.

They received gold medals and will attend an awards event later in the year.

The winning trio are studying at the engineering department at Bradford College and work at CarnaudMetalBox on Dockfield Road.

Andrew Wilkinson and Simon Ward are studying for the Higher National Certificate in mechanical engineering and Andrew Hyde is on the advanced diploma Engineering Awards Limited course.

Geraldine McCallum, curriculum team leader for engineering, said, “This is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of the students. WorldSkills UK is a prestigious competition and the team faced a huge challenge. The lads really deserve their success.”

Ian Scholey from CarnaudMetalBox said: “We are incredibly proud of these three young engineers.”

WorldSkills is the UK’s premier set of skills competitions for young people and adults run by UK Skills, a not-for-profit organisation that champions vocational skills and learning through competitions and awards.
