A Bradford-based security products manufacturer is hoping to increase its workforce by up to 50 per cent next year.
Henry Lewis & Son Ltd is a 130-year-old family run business based in Bolling Road which manufactures retractable grills and shutters.
A surge in break-ins through patio doors has created a new domestic market for the firm as homeowners look to protect their properties with roller shutters.
Lewis offers a production and fitting service for local domestic customers.
The increase in domestic orders means the 20-strong firm is looking to recruit around ten more people in 2009.
Managing director Suzanne Smith said: “It’s an ill wind, but the rise in break-ins by burglars forcing patio doors has brought us new business opportunities.
“Patio doors tend to be vulnerable as they are usually at the rear of a property and are targeted by criminals, and there has been a big increase in the level of patio door break-ins.”
Henry Lewis started in 1878 producing guards for textile machinery and eventually supplied many of Bradford’s wool mills.
As the industry declined it sought other markets and now focuses on producing retractable grills and roller shutters and supplies schools, health centres and retailers in the UK and Ireland.
Suzanne, who lives in Wilsden, is the sixth generation of her family to run the firm, having taken over from her father Roger Lewis on his retirement last year.
She is believed to be the only woman managing director in the security equipment industry.
She joined the firm as a receptionist after being made redundant and has worked in most departments.
Suzanne said “My husband also works here and we have a daughter. If she joins the business we’ll need to change the name from ‘& Son’.”
Henry Lewis has completed a rebranding programme to update its website and corporate literature.
The redesign focuses on the firm’s strong heritage and make it stand out from the competition.
Said Suzanne: “We have re-launched our brand with the aim of showcasing what makes Henry Lewis & Son different to the competition.
“This will hopefully make it easier to sell our products.”
