The humble pie is making a comeback, according to Tesco which has seen sales soar to a 30-year high.
It will be music to the ears of father and son Bradford pie makers John and Jonathan Lord who are having trials of their pork pies at Tesco’s Skipton store.
The supermarket said since the early 1980s demand for hot pies had been flat after fast food such as burgers, fried chicken and pizzas took their place.
But now, because of better ingredients, pies have returned to UK dinner tables and also feature on the menus of gastro pubs and upmarket restaurants.
In the last two years sales across all UK retailers have risen by 16 per cent. The total UK pie market is worth £229 million.
The Lords, who run Take and Bake pies in Bradford, are having trials at the Tesco’s Skipton store with a view to supplying 20 outlets.
