Morrisons has been chosen by its competitors as the best retailer of fresh food in the UK.

The Bradford-based supermarket was named Multiple Retailer of the Year in the Re:fresh awards, which are recognised as the premier awards in their sector.

The accolade recognises Morrisons' strong relationships with long-standing suppliers of British produce and its policy of selling locally produced and seasonal fresh produce wherever possible.

Chris Walker, Morrisons fresh foods director, said "We are pleased that our produce departments have received recognition for their hard work and commitment to bringing our customers the very best in quality fresh produce."

On the back of a performance that saw Morrisons increase its profits by 66 per cent in the year to February, chief executive Marc Bolland was rewarded with a £706,000 bonus, equivalent to about 89 per cent of his salary.

His total remuneration for the year, including benefits in kind, pension supplement and the bonus, was £1.69m, nearly double the previous year's total of £871,000.

Retiring chairman Sir Ken Morrison was paid £736,000, the same as the previous year.

Staff raised £1.23m for Asthma UK, the company's charity of the year, in 2007.
