A SHIPLEY-based bakery is celebrating after winning a national industry prize for one of its breads.

Hughes Family Bakers, based in Hirst Lane, won the best standard white loaf category at The Craft Bakers and Butchers Extravaganza, held in Harrogate.

The firm also entered a further five categories at the event, with its sausage roll, wholegrain, innovation, scone and sour dough products.

It picked up second prize for its black pudding sausage roll at the event.

The Craft Bakers Association (CBA) and the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils joined forces for the event, open to butchers and master bakers throughout the country who make products on their own premises.

Tom Hartley, 25, the firm’s bakery manager, made the prize-winning

loaf.

He collected the award from Tony Staniforth, business unit manager at category sponsors Rank Hovis, and baker Charlotte White, who hosted the ceremony.

Philip Hartley, director, who has worked for the company for more than 30 years, said he was proud of his son’s creation and the firm’s victory, which he hopes will further raise its profile in the future.

He said: “It is a great award to win, as there was a lot of competition from across England. I’m chuffed that we have won. It’s really good.

“It was a proper, traditional craft loaf that we did; it had salt, sugar and yeast.

“This win helps put our name out there. We can mention it on our website and publicise it.

“We have won it before. We have also won in the wholegrain category.

“We don’t have a shop, we sell to other outlets.

“We just hope to grow the business and maintain the quality of our goods.”

Hughes Family Bakers, which was set up in 1925, is a wholesalers which supplies items including rolls, scones, breads, baguettes and confectionery to supermarket giants such as the Co-op and Asda across Yorkshire.
