A BUILDING in the heart of Bradford has been transformed into a “co-working” space for creative professionals.

Assembly is a space on Rawson Square that allows professionals to rent a desk and use of the building’s facilities on a short term basis.

It was created to help provide space for small businesses, which may have previously been based in a single room of a house, as well as giving them the chance to network with other like minded individuals.

Although Assembly opened last year, it had its official launch event on Friday, opening its doors for people to see what is on offer there.

The space is found on the upper floor of Market Pavillion on Rawson Place, a long empty building that was finally brought back to use last year. The recently opened Bradford Bakery, which is soon to include a cafe area, is on the ground floor.

Assembly will give small businesses and start ups access to IT equipment, design archives, a library and meeting spaces,a s well as the experience of other members.

It was created by a group of Bradford based small businesses after they recognised the lack of such a facility in the city.

David Craig, who runs a design consultancy and is one of the directors, said users so far have included people from the creative sector, charities, animators and even a virtual reality coder.

He said: “We rent desks here by the day, so you can have people coming in just a day at a time. Others work full time here. So far it is mainly people who live in the Bradford district. Some have just started out in business for themselves, others are people ready for the next step, to move on from their kitchen table.

“We’re getting to the point where we have a few more members now and it is becoming sustainable. It is good for the city and good for the independent quarter.

“As the city grows and flourishes more people will need what we can offer here. They can come here with an idea and leave with everything they need to start their own business.”
