A PUB which has been under careful renovation for over a year will soon open serving ales brewed in its own backyard.

The Rose & Crown in Cleckheaton has been a labour of love for former builder Andy Gascoigne who owns it.

He set up Haworth Steam Brewery, bar and bistro in Haworth Main Street in 2011, but when the brewing side of the business gathered pace faster than anticipated, it was moved to a unit in Cleckheaton.

"Then we saw the pub for sale and at the back of it there was a massive building which we could turn into a brewery, and it was that that interested us more than the pub initially," he said.

Work to build the microbrewery on Westgate site took precedence and it now brews around 200 gallons of beer a week.

Just over a year ago Mr Gascoigne began working on the pub, spending most of his time on the renovation. He hopes to open next month.

"We have turned the clock back 200 years when it comes to the pub itself," he said.

"It has a very traditional feel with flagged floors and wood burners. When we are open we will be serving nice food and real ale - a small sprinkling of our beer and then beers from other Yorkshire micro-brewers."

A new brew celebrating the Cleckheaton move, called Whitechapel, has also been created.

Paul Dixey, secretary of the Heavy Woollen CAMRA branch, said: "We look forward to the pub opening after a major refurbishment. The brewery is already producing some very good beers.

"It will add a little bit of variety to the pub scene, which is pretty good in Cleckheaton anyway."
