The challenge is on for employers across the Bradford district to create 100 apprenticeships for local workers – in just 100 days.

A major new campaign, backed by the Telegraph & Argus, will be launched to encourage students and young people not in education, employment or training to take on an apprenticeship as a way into work.

Bradford will take on the Apprenticeship Challenge, which involves businesses creating 100 apprenticeships in 100 days.

The initiative is part of the fifth National Apprenticeship Week starting on Monday and will feature in an eight-page supplement in the Telegraph & Argus next week.

Simon Waugh, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, said businesses in the district could increase productivity and introduce “fresh new talent and innovation”.

He said: “We are delighted that so many organisations are supporting National Apprenticeship Week by organising events to showcase these benefits. There are some fantastic activities on offer, which I am certain will inspire more companies and individuals to reap the benefits of apprenticeships for themselves.”

To kick-start the campaign in Bradford, students and businesses will be invited to an apprenticeship evening at the Midland Hotel, Forster Square, on Tuesday. It is one of more than 500 events and activities across England.

It will bring together businesses, apprenticeship providers, the students, and their parents and invitations will be sent out to pupils in years 11, 12 and 13 in every school in the district as well as young people who are not currently in employment, education or training.

The event will include the launch of the Bradford Apprenticeship Campaign and a chance for businesses to network with apprenticeship providers, who will host stands and talk to young people and parents.

There will also be presentations by employers on opportunities in their business or sector and activities to improve people’s skills.

John Hayes, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning said: “National Apprenticeships Week is the time to celebrate the countless achievements of learners and employers, and to call on more firms to say ‘you’re hired’ to a new apprentice.

“Apprenticeships provide businesses with a significant return on investment by increasing productivity and introducing fresh new talent and innovation. They are also a sound stepping stone for individuals to build successful careers.”

That's all well and good, and best of luck to them, but I can't help wondering what level of training is provided - real Apprenticeships used to last for several years!

Also, there have been 'Apprentices' taken on by the Council as street cleaners, for just £90 a week, replacing the adult staff now redundant who were earning a fair wage for doing the same job. All of which is blooody outrageous. I don't pay my taxes for Apprentices to squander all their 90 quid on designer trainers and sky tv. And who designs these flippin' trainers anyway? How dare people go around willy-nilly designing things and as if that wasn't bad enough, then go selling it to the unsuspecting masses? OUTRAGEOUS I say. And who owns SKY TV these days, a wealthy individual no doubt and a bunch of greedy shareholders, registered overseas so no UK tax to pay. It makes my blood boil. To think what MY TAXES are being wasted on. Rant..rant...
