Mumtaz plan for Listerhills food factory approved

The location of the proposed new Mumtaz factory in Greyhound Drive, Bradford The location of the proposed new Mumtaz factory in Greyhound Drive, Bradford

A Bradford food manufacturing group has pledged to create 500 jobs within three years in the city as part of multi-million pound plans to build a food factory.

Yesterday Mumtaz, which operates curry restaurants and takeaways, as well as supplying chilled meals and jar sauces to supermarkets, was given the permission it needs to revive proposals for a site it owns at Greyhound Drive, Legrams Lane, Listerhills.

Dr Gul-Nawaz Akbar said the group hoped to begin work on construction by the end of the month. It would be up and running by the end of the year and would turn out 100,000 meals a day, he added.

He told Bradford Planning Panel that while they expected 250 jobs to be created at the new site in the first year, this could increase to 500 within three years.

He added that there had been delays but that a contractor was on board and they were ready to start shortly.

Speaking after the plans were passed unanimously by councillors on the panel, Dr Akbar told the Telegraph & Argus: “It will create a number of jobs and will be a development Bradford can be proud of.

“It’s the biggest single project for the company so far and we hope this is just the first.

“This could make us the largest ethnic food manufacturer in the country.”

Mumtaz has become one of the country’s best-known Kashmiri restaurants with branches on Great Horton Road and one in Leeds. It currently produces its foods at a plant behind the Great Horton Road restaurant and at one in Mytholmroyd. The Legrams Lane manufacturing plant, which would operate on a round-the-clock basis, would bring everything together in one place.

Previous plans for the site were approved by the Council in 2008, but had expired, necessitating a fresh application.

Good that something is happening on a vacant site, but talk about changing there story, the other day Mumtaz said the factory MAY create 200 jobs, this time round its EXPECTED to create 250 jobs and could increase to 500, whilst Dr Akbar says “It will create a number of jobs"

I hope there planning is better detailed than the job number!

They do export a lot of frozen food to Europe. I've seen Mumtaz products in supermarkets in Spain and in germany.

Random numbers?, much like the Mumtaz tax returns.

I think this is a good thing. Whatever happens there will be new jobs created. Surely the exact number will depend upon the demand for their produce so whatever is quoted now will be an estimate anyway.

How does may be 200 jobs suddenly become an estimated 250 jobs and why no previous mention of a possible 500 future jobs other it than being a tool likely to influence the panel.

Whilst a new build on a vacant site and any new jobs are most welcome, it would appear that Mr Blonde's quote of "random numbers like there tax returns" is about right.

Good news. I hope the company's expansion signals their ability to pay the disputed VAT issue in full. Oh sorry, I forgot: aren't they currently embroiled in suing HMRC on grounds of racial discrimination or something? What's the state of play vis-a-vis that particular imbroglio? Anyone?

Whatever HMRC are into them for, you can guarantee that the actual amount of taxes owed will be substantially more. I seem to recall that the T&A reported that the extension to their restaurant in Great Horton Rd ground to a halt in the mid/late 90s because they owed the taxman c.£3M and a number of the Mumtaz directors left the country. I knew someone who worked at the tax office and they routinely investigate the affairs of businesses that generated lots of cash. E.g. restaurants, launderettes, taxis, some of which were notorious for weaving a web of deceit to make the tax investigations much more difficult.

The quality of your written English language in this comment, and the lack of capital letters and punctuation is absolutely dreadful. In the context of what you have written, it is also you're ( ab. for you are) NOT your. Your spelling of color is also wrong, as it should be the English spelling COLOUR.

Yes so they had some tax issues in the past. people seem to forget the good things mumtaz have done, such as support the born in bradford project, 100% of profits from thier vending machines go to the project. They support the air ambulance. They support local youth football teams, not to mention Bradford city. On top of this they are creating growth and jobs in the Bradford region. However the sad thing is people on here will always be negative as its called mumtaz and not john

The Born In Bradford project is voluntary. Whilst the biggest ethnic group of Bradford babies are defined as Pakistani, the biggest group of babies in the project are likely to be white, British.
The results will therefore not be representative

They will most likely get free labour by signing-up to the Government's 'Work Programme', whereby unemployed people are forced against their will to work for no pay or lose the State Benefits to which they are rightfully entitled. A number of companies are now doing this, such as ASDA, and many others are eager to jump on the bandwagon. All I can say is don't eat any food if I have been forced to prepare it for no pay! It may contain fag-ends, gob, or LSD ! You have been warned!!!!

Erm...what "good news"?

The jobs created will most likely be either Min. Wage or un-paid work experience (ie. slave labour). Whoopeedoo.

Would that be the small "Grey" type Aliens, or the tall blonde Nordic types that Adamski met?

There are actually some Aliens who can pass for humans and do live and work amongst us undetected. Bradford, in fact the whole West Yorks. region, is a UFO hotspot. Just within the last couple of weeks there have been sightings at Bradford, Pudsey, Leeds, Birkenshaw, Todmorden. I saw one myself last Summer. This may be the year that they make themselves more fully known, with mass sightings all over the world. Keep watching the sky.
