AN initiative to encourage and recognise businesses which demonstrate their softer side through community involvement has signed up its 100th supporter.

Raising the Bar, which was launched in Bradford three years ago, will hold a week of celebrations next month and is urging supporting firms to share their corporate and social responsibility achievements during Raising the Bar Week (July 4-8). There is also an annual awards ceremony.

The West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce initiative has also unveiled a new website through which it offers free help and advice to firms involved in the scheme.

Bradford-based engineering services company D2e Group is the latest Raising the Bar supporter.

Boss Dave Croft says the firm, which distributes products including power chains and bearings, was involved in a range of CSR activities, including developing youngsters involved in motor sport. He provides free Thai boxing lessons for local young people and D2 has provided bearings for a disabled youngster who plays wheelchair rugby

“We do what we can and I think its important for businesses to reach out beyond their core activities. The Thai boxing lessons help keep the youngsters off the streets and teaches them discipline,” said Dave.

Raising the Bar focuses encourages companies involved in community, environment, economy and education activities.

Rob Lawson from Bradford-based Provident Financial, which has backed Raising the Bar since its inception, said: “This is a unique initiative as it recognises the contribution of all businesses from sole trader to large corporates.”

Stephen Wright, chief executive of Bradford-baaed pneumatics specialist Thorite and West & North Yorkshire Chamber chairman, added: “We’re bringing together individuals, businesses and organisations that can give support or need it. It’s a chance for businesses to show their involvement in their community and demonstrate that they don’t operate in a bubble.”
