Human insight

A talk on the similarities and differences between humans and other animals will be held at the University of Bradford on Monday, September 12, as part of the Sundown Science programme. Only A Monkey Shaved: Are Humans Really So Different To Other Animals? will take place from 6pm to 8pm.

A discussion on how researchers are developing treatments to tackle debilitating conditions such as osteoarthritis will take place at the University of Bradford, on Saturday, September 10. Engineering Replacement Body Parts will explain how researchers can see a day when a damaged knee can be repaired using tissue from natural sources. The event will take place from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Looking into mental health

An exhibition on a ground-breaking piece of work into the activism of people with dementia will be held as part of the British Science Festival. No Limits: Re-imagining Life With Dementia will be held at the Pop Up Arts Space during the festival. The research, undertaken by Ruth Bartlett, aims to raise awareness and challenge the stereotypes, fear and misunderstandings surrounding dementia.

Sound science

Gary the Clown will be explaining how sound is made, how it travels and what it can travel through with his Good Vibrations event on Sunday, September 11. Families attending the event, at Theatre in the Mill from 10.30am to 11.30am, will be able to join Gary’s band and enjoy many magical moments in the interactive science show. Entrance costs £3.

School pupils will be able to debate and discuss issues relating to human impacts on climate change and natural resources at a series of workshops at the University of Bradford. The Sustainable Living events will explore some possible solutions with experiments including making biodiesel from cooking oil and turning potatoes into plastic. The workshops will take place on Tuesday, September 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15.

The University of Bradford’s School of Computing, Informatics and Media, will be offering people the chance to play games against various types of artificial intelligence and discover their strengths and weaknesses, between 10am and 5pm on Tuesday, September 13.

A helter-skelter tour of 100 years of cinematic trickery will be held at the National Media Museum. Experience the wonders of special effects with the museum’s entertaining and informative show. The event will be held at the museum from 11.30am to 12.15pm on Saturday, September 10, and Sunday, September 11.

Impersonator Duncan Wibsey will talk about finding celebrity voices, while neuroscientist Sophie Scott describes what is happening in his brain during a British Science Association Psychology Section-organised event. Carolyn McGettigan will discuss articulation and beat-boxing and Dean Mobbs will talk about fear. The event will take place from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Saturday, September 10.

The British Psychological Society will be testing people’s reactions times and offering them the chance to learn to maximise their memory, between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday, September 14 and Thursday 15.

A show to explain how forces can help people perform amazing circus tricks will be held at Theatre in the Mill during the British Science Festival. Science Of The Circus, organised by Gary the Musical Clown, will feature balloon-modelling competitions and comedy magic. It will take place from 10.30am to 11.30am on Saturday, September 10, at a cost of £3.

Sustainable living

School pupils will be able to attend a workshop to look at whether they are living sustainably. The British Science Association Geography Section will be hosting Are You Living Sustainably? on Thursday, September 15, to discuss whether how people are living is using resources now without thinking about future generations. The interactive quiz will look at ways people can live in a more sustainable way.

Faith matters in science

A lecture at the University of Bradford by Amjad M Mohammed will challenge the myth that science and faith are contradictory. The lecture, on Wednesday, September 14, will explore the need for seeking knowledge as it is described in the texts and give examples of how people of faith have contributed to science, with insight from local GP Rafaqut Rashid.

Exploring sound

The University of Bradford and Bradford Organist Association will be holding an event to explore how musical sound affects organs that use both pipes and digital technology to make their sounds. The event will be held at St Peter’s Church, in Addingham, from 3pm to 4pm on Sunday, September 11.

School pupils will be able to get down to the beat using new technology at Bradford College. Participants of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life will be able to edit and manipulate sounds using drum machines and digital synthesisers. The workshops will take place on Monday, September 12, Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15.

The ethics of reproductive medicine will be explored at a school-only workshop at the University of Bradford. Participants will visit the labs to discover the facts behind how reproductive medicine has developed and discuss the issues surrounding this controversial subject, including how old is too old to have a baby and who decides who should and shouldn’t be given help to conceive? The event will take place on Thursday, September 15.

The school-only event, called Molecules To Human – A Journey Along the Drug Discovery and Development Pathway, will be held at the School of Pharmacy on Wednesday, September 14.

Zombie fun

School pupils can star in their own zombie movie and look at microbes which infect the human brain using bioviewers, microscopes and slides. The Hollywood Science – Journey Around The Body workshops will be held at Bradford College on Monday, September 12, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14. Visitors will also be able to make models of microbes and antibodies, or have make-up applied to show the physical symptoms of different infections.

The Unviersity of Bradford will be holding a family-orientated event to give people the opportunity to extract DNA and gain a better understanding of genetic engineering. Dr Jim Boyne, a biomedical sciences lecturer will host Genetic Engineering: How Science Fiction Is Rapidly Becoming Science Fact,combining theoretical understanding with practical experience.

A little taste of Hollywood

Schoolchildren will have the chance to be an action stunt designer for the day at Bradford College. Visitors to the Hollywood science workshops will have the opportunity to design stunning car crashes, as well as designing high-tech vehicles which can withstand impacts. The workshops, from Monday, September 12, to Thursday, September 15, will also allow visitors to witnesses amazing chemical explosions and see how it’s done in the movies.

Fighting a killer

The Bradford Infection Group will hold a presentation on the causes and effects of Hospital Acquired Infections, which kill about 5,000 people each year in the UK. Consultant microbiologist Kevin Kerr will hold the interactive laboratry exhibition from 1pm to 3pm on Thursday, September 15, to give people the chance to find out more about the pathogens which cause Hospital Acquired Infections and methods now used to combat them.

The two-hour debate and discussion on human tissue in research will take place on Monday, September 12.
