Business leaves Burley-in-Wharfedale to go back to Otley

A family-run carpet business has started trading in Otley again – after an eight-year “temporary” stay in Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Otley Mills Flooring Limited – formerly Otley Carpet Mills – has moved from Main Street, Burley, to Manor Square, in Otley.

The company, which the Smith family have been involved in running for four generations, started out at Otley Mills but moved to Burley about eight years ago.

Jason Smith, who is now running it with the help of his children and mother, said: “We officially started trading as the new company yesterday but we began moving to Otley a few weeks ago.

“This is a great location and the amount of people who’ve popped in to say hello, including some people who have traded with us for many years and others we haven’t seen for ages, has been incredible. We’ve never really had a frontage like this before.

“Having people pop in is a nice feeling and very encouraging, but it’s early days and we’ll have to see how it goes.

“It was sad to leave Burley but we’d only meant to go there as a temporary measure, and ended up staying eight years!”
