Swimmer Price Misses Out On Medal

December 20, 2000 12:44: Barnet Copthall's Sarah Price, ranked No 1 in the 100m backstroke in the European Short-Course Championships in Valencia, had to settle for fifth place in the final.

Sarah had been in tremendous form in the British Winter Championships at Sheffield the previous week, gaining golds in the 100m and 50m and a bronze in the 200m.

But the Barnet Copthalll star was below her best in the heats of the 100m in Valencia when fifth in 1min 01.33secs.

She was behind her arch rival Katie Sexton (Portsmouth Northsea) who she had beaten in the national event. Sexton was joint second.

Sarah improved her time marginally in the final, clocking 1min 01.25secs but was well behind I Hiavackova (Czech Republic), an easy winner in 58.62secs. and Sexton, runner-up in 1min 00.04sec.

Consolation for Sarah came in the 4 x 50m medley relay when she was a member of the British team which finished third in a new national record of 1min 51.20secs. Sweden won with a new world record of 1min 48.31sec, from Germany (1-50-96).
