'Fair traders' win award
Haworth has gained fair trade zone status, following a six-month campaign by villagers.
The campaign was spearheaded by traders Rita Verity and Anna Scott of Sonia's Smile - a Main Street shop selling fair trade products.
An eight-strong steering group co-ordinated the campaign and a certificate has now been awarded to the village by the Fair Trade Foundation. Rita said she was delighted with the status and said it would provide a strong foundation to build on.
"Haworth will now be recognised globally for its awareness of fair trade issues," she said, "When we began the campaign back in June, the initial response was slow and it was difficult to raise awareness, but it gained momentum. We've now got support from Keighley College, the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Haworth Tourist Information Centre, and shops, churches, pubs, and B&B establishments."
