Recalling Visions Of The Future

A reader wondered what happened to the futuristic Pond fountain by the Town Hall in Watford.

M Forsyth, of Watford, writes:

THE Pond was unveiled in December 1968. The report in The Watford Observer at the time described it as "futuristic", though some commentators used less complimentary words about it.

The council had held a competition for a new fountain which was won by J.R. Warton, a student at Brighton College of Art. The area round the pond was to be landscaped as part of the planned alterations to the town centre and R.E. Edmonds of Clements offered a donation towards the cost of this new feature.

Then, as now, the Pond was altered as part of a town centre enhancement, and then as now, this included a piece of art. This piece did not however last long. It froze solid during its first winter, it was mocked by the local students during their Rag Week, and disappeared some time in the 1970's.
