Sights set on top six

ST ALBANS CITY FC produced their finest 90 minutes of the year, emerging 2-1 victors over high-flying Grays Athletic to rekindle hopes of a top six Ryman Premier League finish.

A Simon Martin double was enough to give City all three points with the Saints now already equalling last season's points total.

Another plus point was the performance of the Saints' new signings, Scott Holding and Darren Baxter. Holding steadied a nervous looking defence while Baxter came on mid-way through the second-half, immediately setting up Martin's winner with a jinking run.

Saints took the lead in the seventh minute when Martin got the final touch to a Rob Smith header however the good work was undone shortly before the break when Ryan Moran gifted Nathan Thomas the equaliser.

An entertaining match was finally settled 15 minutes from time when Martin beat Capleton at his near post although Grays piled on the pressure late on as the referee somehow found it fit to add eight minutes of injury time.

St Albans City: Wilmot, Honeyball, Cook (Baxter 74), Moran, Holding, Evans, Kean, Nabil (Ansell 57), Martin (Bignall 90), Wraight, Smith.

Grays Athletic: Capleton, Robinson, McLeod (Risley 66), Woolsey, Sussex (Abraham 81), Fiddes, Cooper (Haswell 74), Rainford, Thomas, Edwards, Lock.
