KEIGHLEY AA

Ideal water levels and improved temperatures have combined to make conditions perfect for the new river season, which began on Monday. Local tackle shops are reporting increased sales of traditional maggot bait, although one Keighley member may consider holding on to his spinners for a while longer after netting an impressive 9lb 2oz pike at the weekend in a slow-flowing stretch of the Aire near town. The Keighley club are also celebrating after secretary Dennis Freeman announced 50 new members had joined since the beginning of the year. He said: “We have some beautiful stretches of canal and river waters on our doorstep and the quality of fish, particularly in the Aire, is as good as it has been for many years. We are delighted people are responding to that. It’s refreshing to receive applications from people who are totally new to the sport but we are equally pleased to see some anglers returning to the club after a long absence.” To mark the new river season, match secretary Darren Watson has planned a series of Thursday evening River Aire contests to run over the summer, starting this week. Matches are at 5.45 with a strict ten-peg limit, and members should contact Darren on 07795-243332 to book a slot and obtain match details.

SALTAIRE AA

Anglers MUST take home used line and not discard it in the water or on the bankside. We have had three incidents of discarded line at Tong Park alone in the last week. The first was simply a ledgering pop-up rig left in the water that was removed by pulling firmly from the water and wrapping it around my hand and then chopping into short lengths (two cuts through the wraps) and discarded into the refuse bin at home; the second was a simple tangle, dealt with in the same manner.; the third had a response from both the RSPCA and Yorkshire Swan Rescue Hospital, details and pictures of which can be found on our and the YSRH Facebook pages. An over-strong carp controller float rig had become entangled around the leg, body and neck of the pen (the female swan) meaning she could not eat, fly, only drink with difficulty and only swim with one leg. Fortunately, the hook was not down her throat, so after a number of hours she was released from the entanglement and returned to the water to continue (with the cob) to raise her three cygnets, (originally five hatched and two died within three days of hatching). This incident could have led to the death of four swans. We (the committee) are disgusted with the carper responsible and if he is identified he will be banned for life from the club and his name passed to other local clubs. Model remote control boats are not allowed on the water, their motors invariably leak fuel, polluting the water. We have had an incidence of this which led to all five swans attempting to walk to another lake (not that there is one near, they would have walked up the hill into a housing estate where they could have been killed by a bus or car). There is a working party planned for Saturday at Tong Park (closed to anglers until 3pm) please come and assist, the sooner the work is completed the better it will be for all members.
