SCHOOLS on the route of the £29 million Cycle Superhighway between Bradford and Leeds are signing up to a new scheme designed to improve access to cycling.

Byron Primary School in Barkerend hosted the start of the CityConnect ‘Bike Friendly Schools’ project yesterday. The initiative provides participating schools with new cycle storage, access to bikes for children, and extra training for staff and pupils. CityConnect said the scheme had already proved so popular it has been booked up for the rest of the school year.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s deputy transport chairman, Councillor Eric Firth, said: “By enabling schools to become Bike Friendly, our teams can help cycling become part of their physical education, teaching pupils to ride and to access bikes on school grounds.”

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s portfolio holder for sport, added: “The scheme is helping to bring a much-needed change to Bradford and beyond, helping to break down the barriers that children face.”
