A TEAM of volunteers has thanked businesses and Bradford Council for their help restoring the community's war memorial to its former glory.

The Greengate war memorial had fallen into disrepair, before Peter Cannon took it upon himself to improve the site.

He stripped the paint from the railings at the memorial, on the junction of Harrogate Road and New Line, over three weeks, before repainting them.

Business and community groups donated the paint and have now also donated flowers, bulbs and a Christmas tree to the memorial.

Palmers Garden Centre donated winter flowers, Idle and Greengates Rotary Club donated 5,000 crocus bulbs, and Warm Lane Farm in Yeadon has donated a 14ft Christmas tree.

Bradford Council awarded the group a £400 grant for Christmas lights, which are being switched on at 5pm on December 6.

Marian Cannon, the treasurer of Friends of Greengates Cenotaph, said: "The support we have received is absolutely fantastic, we are over the moon.

"Everyone you meet, even people not from Greengates, have commented on how nice it looks.

"It's such an important monument for the area because all the people whose names are on there were local.

"We just hope people will continue to support us to make sure the memorial stays in good condition, the council are organising for it to be cleaned next year too."
