A CHARITY has celebrated a decade of supporting children and young people in Bradford at an awards evening.

One In A Million provides sports, arts and enterprise pathways for children and young people living in some of the city’s most disadvantaged areas.

The charity held its annual STARS Awards ceremony at Bradford Grammar School on Saturday, and over 300 people from the world of sport, art and business attended the evening.

Morgan Brigg and Morgan Cowling, both 17 were presented with the Sports Young Person of the Year Award by David Baldwin, Burnley Football Club Chief Executive.

The pair has helped the charity with its Streetwise football programme, set up to keep young people off the streets. Each of them has volunteered over 150 hours to the project.

Kersten England, Bradford Council Chief Executive, presented Shannon Dalby with the Arts Young Person of the Year award, for her volunteer work helping run dance sessions. Brodie Nash won the Alternative Education Young Person of the Year Award for turning around his behaviour and improving his work. It was presented to her by TV presenter Tanya Arnold.

Danyal Hussain won the One In A Million Freeschool Young Person of the Year award, presented to him by Stuart McCall, Bradford City Manager and James Mason, Bradford City Chief Operating Officer. He was praised for his positive outlook and for being a role model for other students.

Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Alun Griffiths presented the Volunteer of the Year award to Jid Rahman, a Leeds Becket students who has volunteered with the charity.

Conner Griffin won the One In A Million Award, presented by Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire Major Stan Hardy. He has been with the charity since he was eight, and now 15 he regularly volunteers for the charity and helps other young people develop essential skills.

Wayne Jacobs, charity Co-founder, Chief executive and former Bradford City player, said; “It was fabulous night where we honoured six very deserving young people, which was a truly fitting way to celebrate our charity’s 10th anniversary.

“We would like to thank all the young people, workers, volunteers and supporters who have played a part in our journey over the last decade. It takes a community to raise a child and we are grateful for everyone who has played their part to support our work amongst Bradford’s children and young people who are one in a million.”
